Application of GIS in Construction Management (Full Practical course)

Ø INTRODUCTION

The Construction industry has a huge number of tasks involved and cost involved in these projects is also very large. The project managers have a hard time monitoring the projects between site and office. They have to come on site to know the progress of work and decide the sequence of work •

Integration of Geographical Information System (GIS) and project management software with visualization was recognized as one of the most important tools for achieving this goal. This integration would show visualization of construction progress w.r.t. time.

In this IACT course the drawings will drafted using a computer – aided drafting (CAD) program (AutoCAD), the construction schedule is prepared using Project Management Software (MS Project), the updated schedule information (which mainly includes percent complete) which is updated in the Geodatabase (Arc Info).

Successful implementation of GIS has been reported in many fields of civil engineering such as transportation, water resources, facilities management, urban planning, construction, E-business, landslides, etc.

The creation management of construction information, integration of various information, visualisation, E-commerce and cost estimation are some of the major benefits of using GIS in construction industry. This section provides a summary of the work on the different applications of GIS technology in construction industry.

Ø Objectives

At this program's conclusion, participants should be able to:

l  To explore the capabilities of existing GIS tools to generate the project schedule in GIS itself and combining it with 3D capabilities in order to manipulate both 3D model and schedule on a single platform.

l  To study various problems in conventional construction management technique

l  To eliminate problems of construction management by integrating project management software with GIS.

l  To extend the use of a GIS based 4D management approach for different phases of a construction project, quantity, takeoffs, cost estimate and direct sunlight visualisation may also be integrated with the 4D system developed within GIS.

l  Assess and control work methods, resources and systems to meet works requirements

l  Contribute to controlling project quality, progress and cost

l  Develop and improve productive working relationships

l  Monitor project progress, costs and information

l  Lead project meetings and manage the performance of teams and individuals

Ø TRAINING METHODOLOGY

The IACT offers unique 5 days course fellowships that immerse employees in hands-on trainings. Through the program, fellows pair up with experienced trainers to complete hands-on projects like Construction Management, Project planning and execution and Project Contract Administration , foregoing traditional classroom training to accelerate the learning process from day one to day five .

This training course will combine presentations with instructor-guided interactive discussions between participants relating to their individual workplace. Practical exercises,  case studies aiming at stimulating these discussions and providing maximum benefit to the participants will support the training. This interactive training course includes the following training methodologies as a percentage of the total tuition hours:

l  20% Lectures, Concepts, Role Play

l  80% Based on Case Studies & Practical Exercises

l  Pre and Post Test

Ø WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

l  This  training course is designed for persons who desire to learn practical GIS construction management techniques that will assist them in completing work tasks, establishing and maintaining priorities and meeting deadlines for work and projects.

l  This training course is appropriate for management professionals and for anyone who has an interest in a management position in any type of construction owner or contractor organization.
